Is your child struggling with their handwriting, and you're looking for a way to help them improve it that feels like play?

Your child is starting to show an interest in sounds and writing, and you know this is a skill you want to get right from the beginning. But letter formation feels like hard work. Letters are oversized, reversed, or scattered across the page. Capitals appear in the middle of words. Writing is avoided or leads to frustration.

Their teacher has suggested practising at home, but your child resists anything that feels like sitting down to “do school.” If they have additional needs, fine motor tasks and focus can make writing even more challenging, and every attempt to help feels like a dead end.

So you try what everyone suggests - tracing books, handwriting workbooks, pencil grips, even rewards or sticker charts. You follow the advice, hoping something will finally click.

But the truth is, those things don’t work. Not in a lasting, meaningful way. In fact, the Department for Education now advises against tracing altogether. In the 2025 Writing Framework, schools have been told that tracing isn’t a viable activity for teaching handwriting because it can create bad habits and reinforce incorrect letter formation.

At best, these tools provide a temporary solution. At worst, they lead to frustration, boredom, and resistance. Because real handwriting progress doesn’t come from repetition alone, it comes from memory and rhythm.

What’s missing from all those activities is music, because that’s how the brain learns best.
When children sing and move as they learn to form each letter, they’re activating the motor, memory, and language centres of the brain all at once. This builds strong kinaesthetic memory, making letter shapes easier to recall and reproduce with confidence.

Research shows that combining music and movement with learning can boost memory retention by up to 75%. It’s not just more effective, it’s more enjoyable, too.

Hi, I'm Del...

I’m a mum, phonics teacher, early reading specialist, lifelong book lover, and digital artist. I’m also the founder of The Little Reading Nest, where I help overwhelmed mums feel confident supporting early reading, writing, and phonics at home in ways that actually work for real family life.

Over the past decade, I’ve worked as an Early Years teacher, SENCo, and Early Literacy Specialist, and if there’s one thing I’ve seen time and again, it’s this: handwriting can become a huge barrier to reading confidence when it’s taught the wrong way. And too often, it is.

I know how overwhelming it can feel when your child wants to write, but every attempt ends in resistance or confusion. That’s why every resource I create is simple, playful, and grounded in what actually helps children learn - research-backed, brain-based, and shaped by years of experience supporting early writers.

Sing to Write brings all of that together. By incorporating song, children don’t just memorise how to form letters; they internalise them. They build lasting neural connections that support fluent writing and confident reading.
